The California Golden Bears beat the Mississippi State Bulldogs, 14-7, at Prisoners Ballpark. The win was largely due to the efforts of shortstop Anthony Worthey, who captured player of the game honors. He went 3 for 4 with 3 singles and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 4. California, now 2-1, has gotten their season off to a good start.
The Golden Bears had to work out of trouble in the top of the ninth. The score was 14-7, California, with one out. Mississippi State, with the bases loaded, was mounting a threat. J.P. Pinkerton dug in at the plate, but on a first pitch fastball, he hit into a double play.
