Victory Pushes Black Bears Record to 48-44
|
DeKalb designated hitter Willie Zavala had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Zavala went 3-5 with a double and 2 singles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once, even as Fraser Valley beat the Cornhuskers, 7-5. Zavala was named the player of the game despite the loss. Fraser Valley reliever Paolo Jens picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Bill Neville was saddled with the loss. Shu-de Tian notched his 22nd save in 26 chances.
The Black Bears beat the Cornhuskers in part due to timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out single Dan Groover produced in the bottom of the fifth. Batting against DeKalb pitcher Bill Neville, Groover gave his team a 6-5 lead when he hit a 2-run single.
"We'll grab a cold one tonight and go after another win tomorrow," Groover said.
The Black Bears improved to 48-44.
