Multi-HR Game for Marrero in 10-8 Win
|
The DeKalb Cornhuskers grabbed a 10-8 win over the Fraser Valley Black Bears at The Stetson Bowl. DeKalb first baseman José Marrero slugged 2 home runs, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 3 to earn player of the game honors. The winner was DeKalb reliever Ray Burns, now 1-1. The loser was Yoichibei Matsubara. Adam Stickells converted his 18th save in 23 tries.
Had Gerardo Zapata not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Zapata hit a 3-run home run. That made the score 9-7, in favor of the Cornhuskers.
"We came out aggressive," said Cornhuskers manager Eduardo Varerla. "We came out swinging the bats."
The Cornhuskers bumped their record to 36-27 with this latest triumph.
