Behind a solid performance from first baseman Willis Pierce, the Wichita Wolverines defeated the Cincinnati Snaps, 4-1. Pierce slugged 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice for the Wolverines. Al Hrabosky Jr. locked down his 12th save. The 5th-place Snaps have lost 4 straight games.

Pierce contributed a big hit, a 2-run home run, for Wichita in the top of the fifth. With his team trailing 1-0, Pierce took a cutter from Willard Stady and stroked the home run to left. His 6th home run of the season allowed the Wolverines to leap in front, 2-1.

"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said Wichita skipper Dave Moran.
