Ducks Nip Cornhuskers, 6-5
|
The Long Island Ducks relied on the hitting of first baseman Ken Cashmann to stop the DeKalb Cornhuskers, 6-5. For the game, Cashmann was 2-4 with a home run and a walk. He scored 3 times. Takamasa Oki closed the game out for Long Island, earning his 3rd save. The loss lowers the DeKalb record to 6-4.
Had Fernando Gutiérrez not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Gutiérrez hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Ducks.
"We cashed in when we had the chance," said Long Island manager Elvis Callahan.
