Fernández drives in 5 runs as Death Stars Squeeze Past Peoria
|
Detroit beat Peoria at The Death Star, escaping with a 9-8 win. The win in large part was due to first baseman Raúl Fernández, who earned player of the game honors. He went 2-4 with a home run. He scored 2 runs and drove in 5. The win was César Castro's in relief. His record improves to 3-2. Ryan Shelton took the loss for Peoria. Kent Whitten earned his 13th save in 16 chances.
Had Yan Rossi not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 3rd, Rossi hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 9-8, in favor of the Death Stars.
"I'm proud to be a part of what we've got going on here," Rossi told the Detroit Daily. "It's a great group and we're happy with the win."
Detroit is now 81-67, 3 games up in the Darryl Kile League Joe Torre Division.
