|
Bronx pitcher Ronald Stevens gave the Mustangs all they could handle, but in the end, Billings left Bronx Ballpark with a 6-3 win. Stevens allowed 1 earned run on 4 hits over 6.1 innings. Gilberto Chávez picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 1-2. Javier Franco was tagged with the loss. John Otten was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 16 of 20 save opportunities.
Had Al Nichol not delivered a key base hit in the top of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Nichol hit a 2-run double. That made the score 4-3, in favor of the Mustangs.
In postgame remarks, Nichol said: "To all who've been doubting my effort -- I hope they saw this game."
With the win, the Mustangs improved to 42-43.
