Cerca Excels, But Paczkis Win
|
Canton and Fort Worth met at LaGrave Field in front of a lively crowd.
Fort Worth got a terrific performance from second baseman Ruy Cerca, but it wasn't enough to beat the Canton Paczkis. Canton won the LaGrave Field contest, 10-7. Cerca was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He went 3 for 3 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 3. Canton reliever Kojuro Saito picked up the win to move to 1-1. Juan Carlos Baraja suffered the loss.
The Paczkis got a big at-bat from first baseman Jesús Ortíz. For the game, Ortíz went 1-5 with a double, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. In the top of the seventh, with the bases loaded, he stroked a bases-clearing double. His 3rd double of the season gave Canton a 8-6 lead.
"Nice to put this one in the win column," said Ortíz.
Canton, now 9-4, has played well in the early going.
