So Cal and Portland duked it out at Waterfront Park and the Republic came out victorious.
So Cal Republic starter Phoenix Smith was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the Portland Beavers, 6-3. Smith, now 5-1, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 5 hits, while striking out 6, walking 0, and allowing 2 earned runs.
The Republic got a big at-bat from center fielder Gerd Zabel. For the game, Zabel was 1 for 4 with a home run, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. In the top of the sixth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 32nd home run of the season gave So Cal a 5-2 lead.
"We played a good game and came out on top," said Zabel.
The first-place Republic, at 111-37, now lead their division by 16 games.
