The inspired effort of Long Beach designated hitter Mike Matheny was not enough to prevent a 5-4 loss to the Brooklyn Cyclones. Matheny was 3 for 3 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Kenny Moran earned the save for Brooklyn, his 3rd of the year. Brooklyn, now 11-3, is playing great baseball to start the year.
The Cyclones got a big at-bat from second baseman Lázaro Guzmán. For the game, Guzmán went 1-3 with a home run. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the fifth, with a runner on 2nd, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 2nd home run of the season gave Brooklyn a 4-3 lead.
