Burt, Indiana State Start NCAA College World Series Strong with Home Win
|
The Indiana State Sycamores started the NCAA College World Series in style today, downing the visiting Fresno State Bulldogs at Pit Vipers Ballpark by a score of 14-1 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Sycamores right fielder Chad Burt was named player of the game after he was 2 for 3 with a home run, a double, and 2 walks, while scoring 3 times and driving in 5.
Parsippany-Troy Hills Township, New Jersey-born Jon Kirkendall came through in the clutch. In the bottom of the second, with a runner on 1st and the Sycamores trailing 1-0, he hit a 2-run home run to left to put Indiana State on top.
"It's true for every sport, I think, but the playoffs are so short that you've just got to get in and get hot," Indiana State manager Philip Lilly told BNN after the win. "We took care of the first part and now we're just working on the second."
The next game is scheduled for tomorrow at Pit Vipers Ballpark. The scheduled starters for the game are Eric Russ for Fresno State and Dave Michlin for Indiana State.
