Panthers Clip Mustangs in Tight Contest
|
Downsview got a terrific performance from designated hitter Jason Maio, but it wasn't enough to beat the Derby Panthers. Derby won the Visigoths Stadium contest, 6-5. Maio was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He was 2-3 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. Chris Gatz, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 1st save. The Panthers sit in 5th place in the Pete Rose League Roger Clemens Division with a record of 11-14.
The most important at-bat for Derby came in the top of the ninth inning, when left fielder Tom Vallis stroked a 2-0 fastball to left for a run-scoring single, putting Derby up, 6-5.
"It was a solid team effort and we'll try to keep this momentum going," Vallis told reporters after the game.
