The Derby Panthers met little resistance from the Santa Clara Vampires, beating them 14-1 at River Otters Ballpark. Fernando Benitez led the way. He was 2 for 4 with a home run and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 4 for Derby. Larry Sceviour, the winner, improved to 2-3. He held Santa Clara to 1 earned run on 4 hits over 7 innings, while racking up 10 strikeouts. The Panthers now have a mark of 9-13.
Joe Haggerty was a key contributor to the win for the Panthers. In the top of the seventh with one out, the light-hitting first baseman stroked a double to left. He went 3-5 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once.
"We were firing on all cylinders today," said Panthers manager Daniel Hills.
