The Wake Forest Demon Deacans picked up a win at Scandals Ballpark, knocking off the South Carolina Gamecocks, 4-3. Starting pitcher Jared Layton played a key role in the triumph. In 6 innings, Layton surrendered 5 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 2. He allowed 3 runs. The Demon Deacans improve their record to 20-21 with the win over South Carolina.
Jeff Cross, not known for his power, had a big at-bat with two out in the top of the sixth. That's when he connected on a fastball from Tommy Free for a solo home run. His 6th home run of the season put Wake Forest in front, 4-3.
After the game, Wake Forest manager Roberto Salas applauded the team's effort. "They busted their tails out there," he said.
