Martin Helps Golden Eagles Beat 49'ers
The Long Beach State 49'ers and South Mississippi Golden Eagles were greeted by an enthusiastic crowd at Ballpark of Storm Lake College.

The South Mississippi Golden Eagles downed the Long Beach State 49'ers, 11-5, at Ballpark of Storm Lake College. The Golden Eagles were led by Mat Martin, who captured player of the game honors. He went 3 for 5 with a home run and a double, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 3. Danny Cook got the win, improving to 6-1. He pitched 5.2 innings, giving up 4 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 8 and walking 1. Kevin Hargrove, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 4th save.

Tied up with the 49'ers in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Golden Eagles got a boost from second baseman Nick Ashburn. With the bases loaded, Ashburn saw a 1-0 slider from Matt Connors and hit a 2-run single to break the stalemate and put South Mississippi on top, 2-0.

"We can always improve and get better, but we're feeling confident after that win," said Martin.

South Mississippi is now 24-15, Long Beach State 24-15.
