The California Golden Bears wasted an inspired, 6.1-inning effort from starter Chad McCarty, falling 2-1 to the Arizona State Sun Devils at Prisoners Ballpark. Abel Murphy, credited with the win, is now 2-0. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 2 innings. Jim Unknown closed it out for his 1st save.
Neither team could produce runs. So, Bill Hooper's at-bat in the top of the eighth was critical. With two out, the Arizona State pinch hitter hit a 2-run double, to give his team a 2-1 lead.
"Runs were at a premium," said Arizona State manager Tim Spencer.
