49'ers Turn Back South Mississippi, 10-8
|
Long Beach State and South Mississippi duked it out at Ballpark of Macclenny College and the 49'ers came out victorious.
The Long Beach State 49'ers outlasted Danny Stepp and the South Mississippi Golden Eagles, 10-8. Stepp was impressive in the loss. The South Mississippi catcher went 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. The winner was Long Beach State reliever Scott Mims, now 2-0. The loser was Kevin Scott.
Trailing 3-2, Long Beach State's fortunes turned in the bottom of the second inning when the 19-year old first baseman Jason Chasteen lifted a 1-0 fastball into the stands for a grand slam home run. The round-tripper put the 49'ers up, 6-3.
"I've been criticized for being a slacker, but the one thing I do care about is winning," Chasteen told the Long Beach State Times.
Long Beach State now has a 3-game win streak.
