Washington State rode a good effort from starter Gary Compton to beat the Rice Owls at Tribe Ballpark. The final score was 8-2. Compton went 5.1 innings to notch the win. He scattered 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 7. His record improves to 1-0. Brandon Swift got credit for the save for Washington State. It was his 1st of the year.
A key at-bat in the game came in the bottom of the seventh inning when the Cougars sent teenager Kevin Glordano to the plate against Owls hurler Jim Harris. With the bases loaded and a whole stadium watching, the kid controlled his nerves and delivered huge, hitting a double off a 2-2 fastball to score 3.
"We had a nice day," said Washington State skipper Shinsui Sato.
The 12th-place Cougars raised their record to 8-7.
