The South Illinois Salukis picked up a win at Forney College Grounds, knocking off the Iowa State Cyclones, 6-5. On the mound for South Illinois was left-hander Brandon Roberts, who played a pivotal role in the win. Roberts went 6 innings to notch the win. He scattered 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. His record improves to 1-0. Mike Baker sewed up the save, his 3rd.
A key at-bat in the game came in the top of the fourth inning when the Salukis sent teenager Chris Maynard to the plate against Cyclones hurler Ryan Popek. With runners on 1st and 2nd and a whole stadium watching, the kid controlled his nerves and delivered huge, hitting a double off a first pitch fastball to score 1.
"Honestly, I'm not frustrated," said Iowa State manager Theodore Foster. "The effort was great."
At 5-9, the Salukis find themselves in 21st place in the Ron Fraser Division.
