Commodores Topple Volunteers as Mottaz Shines
|
The Vanderbilt Commodores topped the Tennessee Volunteers, 10-5, with first baseman Mike Mottaz playing a big role. Mottaz went 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 2 for the Commodores in the win. John Cox picked up the win with 6 innings of work. He allowed 2 earned runs on 5 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 5. On the season, he is now 1-0. With the win, Vanderbilt boosts its record to 3-3.
The Commodores grabbed the lead in the top of the second. With two out, Brent Biernacki hit a grand slam home run off Jim Drennen, putting Vanderbilt in front, 5-0. For Biernacki, it was his 2nd home run of the season.
"Good win for us," said Biernacki. "We'll strap it on and go after the next one."
