Commodores Raise Rally Flag, Beat Iowa State, 1-0
|
The Vanderbilt Commodores put one in the win column with an opening day 1-0 triumph over the Iowa State Cyclones. The crowd at Ballpark of Barrow College watched John Cox put on a fine performance, for which he was named player of the game. Steve Higgins picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 1-0. Aaron Kelly was tagged with the loss. Picking up the save was Jimmy Gregus, his 1st.
Vanderbilt took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, pinch hitter Mike Mottaz hit a solo home run that brought the crowd to its feet.
"It's nice to come out on top today," said Mottaz.
