Gnats Knock Off Knights at The Pond
|
The Nichols Gnats stopped the Kingwood Knights, 7-5, at The Pond. The Gnats got a big game from Jesus Mojica, who was 4-4 with 4 singles. He scored 2 times. Nichols reliever Antonio Bayuga picked up the win, bumping his record to 2-1. Ronnie Priest was collared with the loss. Arturo Gallegos picked up the save for Nichols, his 15th of the year.
The Knights had been locked in a 4-4 tie with the Gnats going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 21-year old center fielder Oscar Abreu came to the plate. Abreu hit a 2-run single on a 1-2 fastball from Kingwood hurler Ronnie Priest. It was Abreu's 80th hit of the year.
"I'm just happy to help the team win," Abreu told the Nichols Daily News.
Even with the win, the Gnats have a dismal 31-79 record.
