Pelicans Come Up Short at West Virginia
|
In a close game at Penlee Park, the West Virginia Dancin' Outlaws edged the St. Petersburg Pelicans, 5-4. West Virginia second baseman Ryan Cunningham earned the nod as player of the game. He went 2-4 with 2 singles and a walk. He scored 2 runs. Luis Mena got the win, improving to 1-3. He pitched 5.2 innings, giving up 5 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 5 and walking 1. West Virginia, at 34-31, sits in 4th place in the Donnie Moore League Dusty Baker Division.
West Virginia left fielder Bill Corrales helped the Dancin' Outlaws to the win. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the 20-year old center fielder stroked a run-scoring single. For the game, Corrales was 2 for 3 with 2 singles and a walk.
"We had the game right there for the taking," said St. Petersburg manager Clement Snow. "But we decided not to take it."
