Late Rally Gets Win for Warriors
|
Winfield overcame a superlative game from Victor Saenz to beat Nichols, 4-2. The Nichols pitcher took player of the game honors in a losing cause. He threw 7 innings of 4-hit ball. Scott Ray picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 4-3. Seisaburo Sasaki was tagged with the loss. Willard Stady was credited with the save for Winfield, his 4th of the season.
In the top of the 8th, pinch hitter Jim Unknown gave Winfield the lead when he hit a 3-run home run. The Warriors had been trailing 2-1, but the two-out home run off Nichols pitcher Seisaburo Sasaki changed that -- and Winfield went on to win.
In comments to the Winfield Citizen, Unknown admitted he's been told to improve his work habits. "But," he said, "I know when to take it to another gear."
The last-place Gnats have dropped 4 straight games.
