The inspired effort of Long Island shortstop Jim Willard was not enough to prevent a 15-12 loss to the Riverside Red Bulls. Willard went 4 for 4 with 3 doubles and a walk. He scored 2 times. The first-place Red Bulls, at 83-59, now lead their division by 2½ games.

In a night filled with big hits, none was bigger than the one from Riverside third baseman Kenko Hori, the 24-year old third baseman . He collected his 29th home run of the season in the top of the seventh inning. In the game, Hori was 1 for 5 with a home run. He drove in 4 runs and scored once.

Hori said the win provided a "big morale boost" for the team. "There's a good feeling in the clubhouse right now."
