In a low-scoring affair between the Sandy Springs Spartans and the DeKalb Cornhuskers, pitcher Chuck McNeil was the difference between victory and defeat. The Sandy Springs right-hander earned player of the game honors in the 3-1 Spartans win. Sandy Springs reliever Drew Coffin picked up the win, bumping his record to 6-2. Alan Gorringe was collared with the loss. Tom Polk was called on to finish, recording his 12th save.
In the top of the fifth inning, Sandy Springs got a break when McNeil went to the plate. With one out, the bases empty and the Spartans leading 2-1, McNeil hit a solo home run.
"I feel honored to be a part of this team," said McNeil.
Sandy Springs is now 38-46, while DeKalb is 44-40.
