Wichita pitcher Dennis Gates gave the Mustang all they could handle, but in the end, Carson City left Cowboys Stadium with a 3-2 win. Gates allowed 2 earned runs on 4 hits over 5.1 innings. Mal Goff recorded his 9th save for Carson City. Carson City is now 21-13, Wichita 12-20.
Had Kichisaburo Tanaka not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Tanaka hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Mustang.
"We were in it," said Wichita manager Dave Moran. "We just didn't score enough runs."
