Minneapolis had no answer for Joplin Fireballs hurler Dennis Gates, who overwhelmed Freeze hitters as the Fireballs coasted to a 6-1 victory. Gates, the winner, moves to 2-7. He threw 6.2 innings of 2-hit ball, while fanning 4 and giving up 1 walk. Tomoyuki Kiyomizu, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 31st save.

Kenny Butler contributed a productive at-bat in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded, he drew a walk, driving in 1 run. It was one at-bat that helped Joplin get the win.

"As well as we've been playing, I think we can play ever better," said Joplin manager Jeremy Lake.
