Álvarez Slugs Earthquakes to 9-8 Win
The San Francisco Earthquakes did just enough to sneak past the Bloomington Blazers, 9-8, at Celestrial Fields at Hermann Park. San Francisco designated hitter Luis Álvarez earned player of the game honors. Shi-xian Le earned the save for San Francisco, his 1st. San Francisco, at 4-0, is off to a blistering start.

Álvarez had a game-changing at-bat for San Francisco. It came in the top of the ninth inning with no one out. Álvarez hit a 0-1 splitter from Coco Yamashita for a 2-run home run. It put San Francisco in front, 9-8.

"You can't take yourself too seriously," Álvarez told the San Francisco Observer. "But at the end of the day, we do play to win ballgames."
