Joplin left fielder Ross Stephenson played a vital role in his team's 6-1 triumph over Detroit. He was 4-4 with a home run, 3 singles, and was hit by a pitch, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once for Joplin. Dave Conboy, the winner, improved to 4-5. He held Detroit to 1 earned run on 5 hits over 6.1 innings, while racking up 6 strikeouts. Pat Kirk finished to wrap up his 1st save.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, second baseman Ken Bush had a key at-bat for the Fireballs. With Joplin leading 2-1, he banged a solo home run.
"You can't take yourself too seriously," Stephenson told the Joplin Gazette. "But at the end of the day, we do play to win ballgames."
