Fans who gathered at Excavatar Park saw a good contest between the Peoria Caterpillars and Antioch Coal Miners.

Antioch got a terrific performance from pitcher Rick Childress, but it wasn't enough to beat the Peoria Caterpillars. Peoria won the Excavatar Park contest, 6-4. Childress was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 5 innings allowing 1 run. Peoria is now 25-20, Antioch 33-12.

The game was at a stalemate until pinch hitter Mel Howell came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Antioch pitcher Juan Martínez, he hit a 1-2 curveball for a 2-run single. It was a game-changer, putting Peoria on top, 6-4.

"There are times you get yourself out and there are times you come through," Howell said. "That's how it goes."
