Cardinals Snatch Late Win
|
In a close game at Chickenhawks Stadium, the Kearny High Cardinals edged the Jacksonville State Jaguars, 5-4. Kearny High catcher Arturo Martinez earned the nod as player of the game. He went 1-3 with a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. The winner was Kearny High reliever Travis Wood, now 2-3. The loser was Paul Robinson. The 4th-place Cardinals improved to 27-34.
Had Martinez not come through in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have changed. Instead, with two down, Martinez drew a walk, driving in 1 run. The Cardinals never looked back after taking the 5-4 lead.
"I don't feel you win baseball games by working harder than the other team or 'wanting it more,'" Martinez told the Kearny High Gazette. "You win just by scoring more runs."
