It's Over: Beavers Stop Martínez Saturday, September 18th, 2027 For 29 straight games, Julián Martínez tried to ignore his hitting streak. "But you guys in the media wouldn't let me." The 24-year-old South Carolina first baseman can forget about it now -- it's over! -- courtesy of the Portland Beavers. They held him hitless in 3 at-bats and snapped his consecutive-game hitting string at 29. The streak ended on one good note, however, South Carolina won the game, beating the Beavers 6-4. But Martínez acknowledged that it meant something to him. "It was special," he said, "but I think other people make a bigger deal out of it than I do, or the players do. But that's what you're supposed to do; go out and hit the ball and try and score runs. It was a cool deal. It's over now. Let's try to start it all over again." Martínez is currently hitting at a .305 pace with 28 home runs, 94 RBIs and has scored 84 times. |
