Bruins Overcome Great Performance by Southern in Win
|
The Long Beach State 49'ers got a superb performance from left fielder Will Southern, but the UCLA Bruins still won the game, 8-6. Southern was named the player of the game despite the loss. He was 4-5 with a home run, a double, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. UCLA reliever Frank Butler was the winner. His record is now 2-0. The losing pitcher was Lee Bird. The Bruins improved to a lofty 34-11.
UCLA took the lead in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and runners on 1st and 2nd, George Beasley stroked a run-scoring single to make it 7-6, Bruins.
"We got the victory," said Beasley. "That's all that matters at the end of the day."
