|
Oregon State catcher Florante Cuyco had a terrific game. He went 2 for 4 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 4 runs and scored once, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Rice beat the Beavers, 10-8. Cuyco was named the player of the game despite the loss. The win was credited to Sonny Denton in relief. His record improves to 2-5. Vernon Whittier took the loss. Rice has now won 3 in a row.
Jim Unknown had a go-ahead single for Rice in the bottom of the sixth. With two out and the bases loaded, the 18-year old left fielder hit a 2-run single off Vernon Whittier. His 1st hit of the season made the score 9-7.
"Winning is the only thing that really matters," Unknown told the Rice Herald. "If you can win without even breaking a sweat, more power to you."
