Rice had no answer for Mississippi State Bulldogs starter Nick Ross, who flummoxed Owls hitters as the Bulldogs cruised to a 7-1 victory. Ross, now 1-1, was the winner. In 5.1 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 8, walking 1, and allowing no earned runs. With the victory, the Bulldogs record now stands at 8-13.
Oscar Mayes played a key role in the win for the Bulldogs. The catcher punched a 2-run home run in the bottom of the third inning. For the game, Mayes was 2 for 3 with a home run and was hit by a pitch. He drove in 3 runs and scored once.
