Cardinals Clip Aggies in Tight Contest
|
The Texas A&M Aggies got a superb performance from pitcher Mitch Baker, but the Stanford Cardinals still won the game, 3-2. Baker was named the player of the game despite the loss. He threw 5 innings of 3-hit ball. Stanford reliever Eric Hughes picked up the win, upping his record to 4-0. Jim Unknown absorbed the loss. Albert Cunningham, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 5th save.
Had Marvin Wilhelm not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Wilhelm hit a run-scoring double. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Cardinals.
"I'm trying to keep it simple," said Wilhelm. "Just do my job."
Stanford is 12th in the Cliff Gustafson with a record of 10-11.
