Phillips Helps LSU Outscore Houston
|
The LSU Tigers outscored the Houston Cougars, 13-12. William Phillips led the way, going 3-for-5 for LSU. LSU reliever Ellis LaRiviere picked up the win, upping his record to 1-1. Todd Sutton shouldered the loss. Glenn Strickland got credit for the save for LSU. It was his 2nd of the year.
Had Phillips not come through in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have changed. Instead, with two down, Phillips hit a run-scoring single. The Tigers never looked back after taking the 13-12 lead.
Houston manager José Alonzo said he was disappointed with the loss. "Whenever you score that many runs, you expect to win the game."
The 9th-place Tigers lifted their record to 9-7.
