Owls Stick Ducks with 4-3 Loss
|
Rice beat Oregon at Toughkenamon College Fields, eking out a 4-3 win. The win was due in large part to pitcher Juanito Erlam, who earned player of the game honors. Erlam picked up the win for Rice, going 5.1 innings. He gave up 1 run on 3 hits. He now sports a record of 3-2. Justin Taylor was called on to finish, recording his 4th save.
A key at-bat in the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Owls sent teenager Burton Moser to the plate against Ducks hurler Jason Bueno. With a runner on 1st and a whole stadium watching, the kid controlled his nerves and delivered huge, hitting a single off a first pitch fastball to score 1.
"Winning makes the heart grow fonder -- for more winning," said Erlam, cracking a smile.
Rice is now 5-13, while Oregon is 7-11.
