Ashe Slugs Cougars to 9-5 Win
|
The Houston Cougars topped the UCLA Bruins by the score of 9-5, with the largest share of the credit going to designated hitter Ed Ashe. Ashe hit 2 home runs. He scored 3 times and drove in 5 for the Cougars. Mark Edwards picked up the win, improving his season record to 2-0. He struck out 5 in 6.1 innings. Karl Lewis closed the game out for Houston, earning his 4th save.
In the bottom of the first, Ashe had one of his most important at-bats: a grand slam home run off Don Jones that staked the Cougars to a 4-0 lead.
"You know, at the end of the day, it's about who scores the most runs," said Houston manager José Alonzo.
The 6th-place Cougars improved to 7-4.
