Wildcats Win Thriller, 6-5
|
Crowds lined up early in front of Red Wings Ballpark, eagerly awaiting the start of the 2028 USA NCAA DIVISION I season. On the mound was Jeremy Shaw for the visiting Louisiana-Layfayette Ragin Cajuns and Pat Glass for the hometown Arizona Wildcats. In a spirited contest, the Wildcats pulled out the win, defeating the Ragin Cajuns by the score of 6-5. Earning player of the game honors was Pat Glass. The win was Jim Unknown's in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Tracy Spencer took the loss for Louisiana-Layfayette.
The Wildcats beat the Ragin Cajuns in part due to timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out double Fred Pratt produced in the bottom of the 11th. Batting against Louisiana-Layfayette pitcher Tracy Spencer, Pratt gave his team a 6-5 lead when he hit a walk-off run-scoring double.
"We cashed in when we had the chance," said Arizona manager Zak Buchanan.
