Big Day for Hernández as Gamecocks Down Tigers, 10-7
|
The South Carolina Gamecocks knocked off the Clemson Tigers, 10-7, at Scandals Ballpark. Mark Hernández, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason South Carolina won. The center fielder was 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 3 runs and drove in 3. Steve Burton got the save, the 12th for him this season. South Carolina now has a 3-game win streak.
A key at-bat in the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Gamecocks sent teenager Ed McGuire to the plate against Tigers hurler Will Hannah. With the bases loaded and a whole stadium watching, the kid controlled his nerves and delivered huge, hitting a single off a 2-0 fastball to score 2.
"I was able to barrel up some pitches," said Hernández.
