South Illinois designated hitter Markus James pounded North Carolina Tar Heels pitchers at Bruisers Ballpark, but it was not enough to keep the Salukis from falling, 9-8. James hit 2 home runs, while scoring 3 times and driving in 2. North Carolina reliever Josh Jenkins was the winner. His record is now 2-1. The losing pitcher was Bob Hankins. North Carolina grabbed control in the bottom of the eighth. With one out and runners on 1st and 2nd, Wally Flowers delivered a run-scoring single, to make it 9-8 in favor of the Tar Heels.
"It wasn't our best performance," said Flowers, "but a win in this league is nothing to sniff at."
