The Oklahoma Sooners got a superb performance from catcher Howard Stevens. Still, it wasn't enough to beat South Illinois. The Salukis won the game, 6-3. In spite of the loss, Stevens was named the player of the game. He went 2-4 with 2 home runs. Jim Unknown got the save, the 1st for him this season. With the win, South Illinois goes to 7-10, while the Sooners fall to 9-8.
The Salukis got a big at-bat from designated hitter Markus James. For the game, James was 1-4 with a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the fourth, with runners on 1st and 3rd, he stroked a 2-run double. His 2nd double of the season gave South Illinois a 4-2 lead.
"We take it day by day here," said James, "and today was a good one for us."
