The Virginia Cavaliers did just enough to sneak past the Wake Forest Demon Deacans, 6-5, at Ballpark of Redwood College. Virginia pitcher Troy Hannah earned player of the game honors. Virginia, at 3-0, has sizzled in the early going.

One important at-bat came with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning. Facing Wake Forest hurler Lanny Albert, Doug Mayer drew a walk, driving in 1 run. The Cavaliers went on to win.

"Say want you want about this team, they play nine innings hard," said Virginia manager Larry Vaughn.
