Cyclones Curb River Chiefs, 7-5
|
It was a good time at Coney Island Coliseum, where fans came to watch the Chippewa River Chiefs and Coney Island Cyclones get after it.
Chippewa catcher Doug Turner had a terrific game. He was 3 for 5 with 3 singles. He drove in 2 runs, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Coney Island beat the River Chiefs, 7-5. Turner was named the player of the game despite the loss. Iwane Kaneko got credit for the save for Coney Island. It was his 9th of the year.
A key at-bat in the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Cyclones sent teenager Yoshitoki Kitamura to the plate against River Chiefs hurler Ramón Román. With a runner on 1st and a whole stadium watching, the kid controlled his nerves and delivered huge, hitting a home run off a first pitch curveball to score 2.
"Good win for us," said Kitamura. "Now we'll focus on the next one."
The Cyclones now have a record of 44-64 with the win over Chippewa.
