Zabel Shines in Emeralds Win
|
The Eugene Emeralds and Charleston Panthers lit up the scoreboard at Franklin Mountains Field.
In a high-scoring game between Eugene and Charleston, right fielder Gerd Zabel was a difference-maker. The 19-year-old earned player of the game honors in the 12-8 Eugene win. He was 3-5 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 4. The Eugene winning streak has now reached 4 games.
A key at-bat in the game came in the top of the second inning when the Emeralds sent teenager Masayuki Kimura to the plate against Panthers hurler César Ramírez. With the bases empty and a whole stadium watching, the kid controlled his nerves and delivered huge, hitting a home run off a 0-1 cutter to score 1.
"They played a better game than we did," said Charleston skipper Todd Hall.
