Gnats Need Extra Frames to Get Past Jedi Knights
New Orleans pitcher Hark Liu gave the Gnats all they could handle, but in the end, Nichols left The Republic with a 3-1 win. Liu allowed 1 earned run on 4 hits over 6 innings. The win was Alfonso Sadim's in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Yoshikazu Ichihara took the loss for New Orleans. Jim Unknown earned the save, his 1st, for the Gnats.

Both teams had trouble manufacturing runs. So, Rafael Ortíz's at-bat in the top of the 11th was critical. With two out, the Nichols first baseman hit a 2-run single, to give his team a 3-1 lead.

"Exciting game to play in," said Ortíz. "Getting the win makes it even better."

Nichols is off to a sluggish start, getting just their 11th win in 30 games.
