Patriots Take Close Win Over Berserkers
|
The Manhattan Beach Patriots relied on the hitting of right fielder José Contreras to stop the Minnesota Berserkers, 4-3. For the game, Contreras was 2 for 3 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2. Juan Mendoza got the win, improving to 2-5. He pitched 8 innings, giving up 7 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 6 and walking 0. The third-place Patriots lifted their record to 27-20.
Had Mal Rivers not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Rivers hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 4-3, in favor of the Patriots.
"Honestly, I'm not frustrated," said Minnesota manager Jerry Miller. "The effort was great."
