Madison overcame a superlative game from Noritoshi Hayashi to beat San Antonio, 5-4. The San Antonio pitcher took player of the game honors in a losing cause. He threw 7 innings of 3-hit ball. Getting the save was Tom Wilson, his 18th. The 4th-place Beehive improved to 43-47.
Ryu Watanabe's hit in the top of the ninth was a game-changer. With one out, he rapped a fastball from Jim Unknown for a run-scoring single. It put Madison in front, 4-3.
"We had the game right there for the taking," said San Antonio manager Ernie Goslin. "But we decided not to take it."
